Annata recensita: 2003

Rating: 89/100

Deep ruby with inky highlights.Initially austere nose hints only at underbrush, smoke and rubber, then opens with air to reveal pretty strawberry and red plum aromas. At once sweet and juicy, this boasts lovely red plum and raspberry syrup flavors and finishes with chewy tannins and a lingering smoky by painters (even Michelangelo is said to have used it) and obtained via the burning of wine shoots.

Drink 2008 – 2011

Le Caniette’s 2003 Morellone (70% Montepulciano, 30% Sangiovese) is made in a super-ripe style loaded with plump dark cherries, raspberries, plump and toasted oak. It is absolutely irresistible in its soft-texture, generous personality. The Morellone spent one year in French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011.

The 2003 Nero di Vite (50% Montepulciano, 50% Sangiovese) is made in a similar over-ripe style with notable intensity in its sweet dark fruit, wild herbs and sweet toasted oak.
